Background
The Neighbourhood Wardens scheme was launched in Sutton in July 2001. There
are currently eight wardens patrolling Three Council wards, Wandle Valley,
The Wrythe,
St Helier and hotspot areas within Central Sutton. They provide a high profile
uniformed presence patrolling on foot or bicycle. They act as the "eyes and ears " of
the community, working in partnership with statutory agencies such as the
police, fire service, local voluntary and community organisations , registered
social
landlords and all council groups. They are managed by John Deer who is Community
Enforcement Manager for the London Borough of Sutton.
Scheme Aims
* To reduce crime, fear of crime and disorder
* Give support to local residents and their community organisations such as Residents Associations, Neighbourhood Watch Groups, local schools and church groups.
* Renew a sense of pride and ownership of the area.
* Improve the quality of life for local residents by reporting environmental issues such as graffiti, abandoned vehicles, fly-tipping, defective street lighting, overhanging vegetation and health and safety issues such as dangerous paving and defective street furniture.
* Help to divert local youths away from anti-social behaviour and towards locally run projects.
