The Halifax Building Society state that up to 90% of all burglaries are by casual thieves or opportunists.
Most burglaries happen during the day and often access is gained through open doors and window.
When leaving your home even for a short period
DO NOT
- Leave a note on the door telling callers you will be back later
- leave milk on the doorstep
- leave garage door open with no vehicle inside
- leave curtains drawn during the day
- leave a door key in a hiding place or on a piece of string attached to the letterbox.
- display valuable items in a window.
DO
- take the key from all locks
- fit a security dead lock especially if you have glass panelled doors that can easily be smashed
- lock tools away in sheds, garages and use a padlock
- leave any ladders outside secured to a fixture using a chain and padlock
- close all windows and doors
- leave a light on if you go out at night but not in the hallway.

- Phone 999 and report the burglary
- Don't start clearing up the mess before the police say you can
- start making a note of the items missing.
